Huburban America: New Haven and the Promise of Mobility

Senior Thesis
New Haven, CT


This project analyzes micromobility as the emerging solution to New Haven’s incomplete urban transportation project. It argues that micromobility’s legitimization through mobility hubs is key to the city’s modern connectivity. Finally, it proposes a version of new hubs for New Haven.

Dead Pool

Urbanization, Energy, and Lake Mead  
Las Vegas, NV


Not to be confused with the Marvel superhero, this project is defined by a series of contradictions, opposite-pulling expansions and contractions. Lake Mead’s water levels continue to drop, threatening the fundamental purpose of the Hoover Dam. The changing logics of the desert, of the empty, become further revealed.

Creation of the agency's first comprehensive inventory and needs assessment of 64 bus park & ride facilities across 14 counties in New Jersey. Relied heavily on field visits, data collection, and analysis. Additional considerations for facility utilization rate, level of service, catchment, climate vulnerability, modernization, solar canopy integrations, corridor analysis, and mobility hubs.

What is Gerlach? Nothing happening nowhere. Breaking ground only after having dug up our preconceived notions of how we conceive energy types and space appropriations. This project matters despite its self-fulfilling prophecies of insignificance, “unrealness,” and nonexistence. Further investigations into this Unknown help us train and retune our perceptions to find a real story in the significantly insignificant, to identify the hot waters.

What is Gerlach, continued? The unconfirmed and abstract natures of the Geothermal Energy Development invite the scrutiny and speculation of what interventions could and should look like. How can Gerlach Geothermal continue to gather and directly engage populations and stakeholders, instead of simply disappearing into the desert? Alternative use typologies are presented. They are not rigid, prescriptive drawings meant to delineate exclusive programming. Rather, they require children’s creativity, flexibility, and curiosity for mixing and matching with one another to form various spaces and places. Questioning (un)built hybridity helps identify what Gerlach is, can, and will be.

Compiled footage of train station, rolling stock, and rail operations at New Haven Union Station. Diesel engines hummed as fans roared, electric motors spooled up increasing pitch, electronic bells clanked while train horns blew, bright LED warning lights flashed, pressured systems released spurts of air, wheels hissed as they glided over tracks, and employees authoritatively announced train arrivals. The experience is deeply sensorial and trains are ubiquitous, deeply constrasting greater American contexts of automobile supremacy.
